Why this matters more than any other tip on this page
When a pipe bursts or a geyser fails, the damage isn’t caused by the failure itself, it’s caused by how long water keeps flowing afterwards. A burst that’s shut off in 60 seconds might mean a wet patch. The same burst left running for 20 minutes while someone searches for the valve can mean a collapsed ceiling and ruined flooring. Knowing your valve location in advance is the cheapest insurance policy you’ll never pay for.
Where to look
- Near the boundary wall, usually close to where your water meter is installed
- Sometimes inside a small in-ground box with a metal or plastic lid, marked with a tap or valve symbol
- In some homes, a secondary internal valve exists as well, often under the kitchen sink or in a garage or utility area
- On older properties, it may be a simple tap-style valve rather than a lever, both work the same way
How to turn it off
Most shutoff valves close by turning clockwise, the same direction as tightening a regular tap. Ball valves with a lever handle are even simpler, turn the lever a quarter turn until it sits perpendicular to the pipe. Don’t force a valve that hasn’t been used in years, if it’s seized or won’t budge, that’s worth having a plumber free up before you actually need it in an emergency.
Test it once, don’t wait for an emergency
The worst time to discover your shutoff valve is rusted shut is during an actual burst pipe. Take two minutes this week to find it, confirm it turns smoothly, and if it doesn’t, get it serviced. It costs very little to fix now and could save thousands in water damage later.
What to do once it’s off
Closing the main valve stops new water entering the system, but pipes and the geyser will still drain out whatever water is already in them. Open a tap somewhere low in the house to help release pressure and speed up drainage, and if the leak is near an electrical fitting or geyser element, switch off the relevant circuit breaker as well before anyone goes near it.
