Burst Pipe Emergency? Do This First (While You Wait for a Plumber)

Step 1: shut off the water

This is the single most important action. Find your main shutoff valve, usually near the boundary wall by the meter, and close it fully. Every minute the water keeps running adds to the damage and the eventual repair bill, both for the pipe and for any flooring, ceilings, or furniture affected.

Step 2: cut power to the area if needed

If the burst is anywhere near plug points, light fittings, or a geyser element, switch off the relevant circuit breaker at your distribution board before anyone goes near the water. Water and electricity are a genuine safety risk, don’t take chances to save a few minutes.

Step 3: move what you can

Once the immediate safety steps are done, move furniture, electronics, and valuables away from the affected area if it’s safe to do so. Lifting rugs or carpets off a wet floor, even briefly, can prevent them from staining or growing mould later.

Step 4: relieve the remaining pressure

Even with the main valve closed, there’s still water sitting in your pipes and geyser that needs somewhere to go. Open a tap at the lowest point of the house, an outside tap or a ground-floor bathroom, to help that water drain out rather than continuing to push through the burst section.

Step 5: document the damage

While you wait for a plumber, take a few photos of the affected area on your phone. This is useful for insurance claims later and costs nothing to do while you’re already dealing with the situation.

What not to do

• Don’t attempt to repair copper or PVC pipe yourself with tape or sealant, it rarely holds under pressure and can make the eventual proper repair harder
• Don’t ignore a slow drip assuming it will hold, pipes under pressure that have started leaking tend to get worse, not better
• Don’t wait until morning if it’s a genuine burst, the damage compounds every hour it runs

Once the plumber arrives

A proper repair isolates the affected section, replaces or repairs the damaged pipe, and pressure tests the line before considering the job finished. That last step matters, it confirms the repair will actually hold rather than failing again next week.
